Thank you to all who joined us on Saturday, April 14th 2018 at the stunning Four Seasons Hotel Houston for our 10th Annual Houston Knuckle Ball: A Pitch for Life Gala, in support of brain aneurysm, AVM and hemorrhagic stroke research and awareness. The evening was a great success and it was an honor to be hosting this event in Houston. Longtime Houston native and KHOU Meteorologist, Chita Craft was our evening emcee, while athletes and celebrities from across the country joined in for an evening of fun, exceptional cuisine and philanthropy!
Don and Connie Rankin were presented with the Joe Niekro Foundation Humanitarian Award, recognizing their unwavering commitment and outstanding philanthropic efforts to better the lives of others.
We also presented the Joe Niekro Foundation Patients Award. Three physicians from the Houston area were chosen from our community of patients and survivors. This award honors their significant achievements and outstanding commitments to the advancements of neurological research and treatment. The award recipients were Dr. Roc Chen of Memorial Hermann Mischer Neuroscience Center & UTHealth, Dr. Peter Kan of Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center and Dr. David Cech of Houston Methodist Hospital.
We are committed to supporting patients and aiding in the research and treatment of brain aneurysms, AVM’s and hemorrhagic strokes. Our goal is to raise awareness about the risk factors, causes and treatments of these conditions, while helping support the advancement of neurological research. We provide public education and advocacy, support for patients and families, and develop awareness programs and educational materials for hospitals, clinics and other institutions nationwide. We currently have 52 support groups across North America as well as an online community of over 20,000 survivors, caregivers, physicians, and others supporting our efforts.
We believe that support is a vital part of recovery and the JNF Patient Services Program, which includes both in-person and online support forums, provides a variety of benefits, including mutual support, understanding and acceptance, non-judgmental listening, information, validation of feelings, role models, and much more. Our groups offer a safe haven for patients, families, friends, and caregivers to share their fears, challenges, successes, and failures in an atmosphere where they are loved and accepted by all.
Proceeds from this year’s event will go towards the advancement and expansion of the foundation’s Patient Advocacy Program, as well as the establishment of a localized clinical research grant for applicants in the Houston area.
