It is with great sadness that the Niekro Foundation announces the passing of board member John Welfare.  Our Chair, Jeff Mayer, knew him since their freshman year together at Duke.  Jeff has these thoughts:

“John was a great friend, devoted husband, father and grandfather.  He loved to fish, to hike, and the outdoors generally.  He was also a long-time partner at Deloitte before retiring to spend time with family and to travel the world, fishing and hiking.  He achieved much despite facing serious health challenges throughout his life.

“I believed that combination of empathy for survivors based on his own personal health challenges and his business savvy was perfect for the Niekro Foundation.  I also selfishly looked forward to working with John.  While his time on the board was way too short, his insights and practical service guided us through difficult decisions.  He also generously donated to the Niekro Foundation.

“He will be greatly missed by a great many people.”
